The Post Office has announced it will be closing its Hyde branch as part of its transformation plan. Your local Conservatives are opposing the closure and have set up a petition to save Hyde Post Office.
Many people in Hyde rely on the Post Office to send and receive parcels. A number of pensioners and vulnerable individuals without access to credit manage their finances and benefit payments through the Post Office. With Lloyds, Santander, RBS, Barclays, and HSBC closing their banking branches in the town, the Post Office remains the only option for those wishing to conduct banking transactions through these accounts.
Cllr Andrea Colbourne, Conservative Councillor for Hyde Godley, commented: “This is a worrying development for Hyde. We have seen many big businesses and banking facilities leave Hyde due to 45 years of Tameside Labour’s mismanagement of our town centres. Many people already say Hyde is like a ghost town; this will be the final straw that absolutely decimates our town.”
The Post Office is a government-owned public corporation that falls under the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, who is also the MP for Stalybridge and Hyde. The Conservatives are demanding that Jonathan Reynolds use his influence as Secretary of State to stop the closures and save our post office in Hyde.
